Dunnage airbags, also known as container airbags, have been around since the 1970s. Since then, they have been improved and widely used. The advent of dunnage airbags has helped revolutionize logistics, making it more robust and complete.

1. What is the container dunnage air bag?

Container dunnage airbag is a bag made of two or three layers, with a sturdy valve designed to allow air to be pumped into the bag. Dunnage bag is used to fill gaps between two cargo items or on the top, sidewalls in the container. The main purpose of using these airbags is that protecting goods from being damaged, shifted or broken during transportation, ensuring that when the container is opened at its destination, the goods remain as neatly arranged as when they were loaded. This is the last but not least to assess the quality of goods and the reputation of the businesses.

2. Types of container dunnage airbags

There are two main types of container dunnage airbags:

2.1. Classification by structure

2.1. 1 PP woven dunnage airbags

There are two layers:

PE layer: The innermost layer is made of thick, durable PE plastic, manufactured under strict inspection procedures, ensuring airtightness and strength according to standards.
PP WOVEN layer: The outer layer is made of polypropylene, sewn to the PE layer inside to provide robust protection. The PP woven layer helps prevent impacts and external damage. A pro valve is designed at the top corner of the bag, allowing for quick and convenient air filling and release.

PP woven airbags are suitable for both refrigerated and dry storage containers.

2.2. 2 Kraft paper dunnage airbags

There are 3 layers: PE, PP woven, and KRAFT PAPER.

Kraft paper dunnage airbags have a similar structure to PP woven airbags, with the addition of a sturdy kraft paper layer over the PP woven layer. This makes the bag thicker, better impact resistance, so the price is higher.

Kraft paper airbags are suitable for dry storage containers. It’s the most commonly used in Vietnam.

2.2. Classification by size

There are many sizes of dunnage air bags to suitable with a lot of dimensions of cargo and gaps inside containers. However, we have two most popular sizes:

Size 800x1200mm: suitable for cargo about 1.6m tall, load capacity of 2 tons, bag inflation range of 25-30cm.
Size 1000x1800mm: suitable for cargo about 2.5m tall, load capacity of 4 tons, bag inflation range of 35-40cm.

3. How to use dunnage airbags

Dunnage airbags are very easy to use, which is a major advantage compared to other cushioning materials.

To use a dunnage airbag, you will need three things:

Container dunnage airbag
Air compressor
Airbag inflator

Steps to use:

Step 1: Place the uninflated airbag into the gap that needs to be filled.

Step 2: Attach one end of the airbag inflator to the air compressor hose and the other end into the airbag’s valve. Then, press the trigger on the inflator until the airbag reaches the desired inflation level, then release the trigger.

Step 3: Finally, close the valve.

In less than a minute, you can securely and effectively fill a gap inside a container.

4. How to choose suitably container dunnage airbags

Airbag Shape: Check the weight, thickness, and smoothness of the outer kraft paper layer. Next, ensure the stitching is strong and the valve is sturdy and well-attached with airbag.
